He cleared a place at the table for a guest who would eat while seated in a wheelchair.

Explanation

One of the guests was going to eat without moving from their wheelchair to another chair.

One of the chairs the man had set out was in the spot where that guest would sit at the table in their wheelchair.

Putting that chair away made room for the wheelchair. That guest and all the others now had somewhere to sit, so everyone could gather around the same table.
